Middle School Debate Team!

Hello Parents! 
We are excited to announce that Valley Middle School is partnering with Carlsbad High School Speech and Debate to create a chapter of Speech and Debate for our middle school students! This is an incredible opportunity, useful for public speaking, researching, critical thinking, and argumentation. Middle school students will be introduced to the many paths that Speech and Debate harbors, whether that be developing speaking skills, competition, national championships, scholarship opportunities, or competitions with financial earnings. 

Introducing Speech and Debate early will set students up for success when transitioning into high school debate and into high school classes. We have attached a google sign-up sheet for any of your students who show interest! After they sign up, an after school practice schedule at Carlsbad High School will be ready for them.

 There are 3 different requirements of students: 
- Weekly, flexible zoom meetings that can be scheduled and arranged around the students' already busy schedule. They will learn the basics of their event and get top tier coaching! 
- Meetings in person at Carlsbad - - High School in room 807 that will happen every two weeks (Dates are: 11/19, 12/10, 1/14, 1/21, 2/4, 2/18, 3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/22, 5/6, 5/20). These will happen on the students’ “early out” day (Thursday) to hopefully mitigate any conflicts. 
- Competition! While not required, students are strongly encouraged to compete in their events to truly test, improve, and learn about their event. We will have 3 online middle school tournaments including the Middle School State tournament (May 14-16), an amazing opportunity.

Information will continuously be going out to parents who sign up, to students in the google classroom, and to teachers for communication.
